How would you introduce yourself to our audience?

My real name is Bastien. Native of Vietnam, I grew up in Brittany; in the west coast of France, playing music since my early age. I discovered electronics music properly when I arrived in Paris for my architecture studies. I had the opportunity to dance with my friends in many of clubs in the city, and at warehouse parties. Techno music was definitely my favorite kind of music.

Since 2016, I searched a lot of music. One year later, I created a Facebook Page, called “Spring Rolls Music”. It was a great way to share all music I found and loved. Later, I started to learn how to mix, and turn this Facebook Page into my artist page. I had the opportunity to record several podcasts, and play DJ sets in Paris. Like most of music lovers, I wanted to create my own sound, so I tried Ableton... And I didn't like it. So, I decided to buy hardware gear. I bought synths, groove box, drum machine, effect pedals, mixer... But I wasn't satisfied by this workflow. At the end of 2018, I bought my very first modular system, with a Beatstep Pro. It was composed by: MFB OSC-03, Doepfer A-132-3, Erica Synths Polivoks VCF, Erica Synths Dual VCA, MFB Dual ADSR, Doepfer A-138b, Intellijel μJack and Tiptop Audio uZeus. I worked hard to learn a lot about eurorack world, made my system more personal. Now I work as an architect during the day, and after work I improve my skills on my modular synth, and still learning new stuffs, to play live sets.

Can you take us through a few of your favorite pieces of studio kit?

I think it's one module from Verbos Electronics, Bark Filter. I bought it at the end of March 2022. It's a real game-changer in my setup. You can use it for basic stuff like filtering and choosing filter banks of your sound sources. It can also be an excellent tool for complex sound design, like feedback, with Lfos, gates, and irregular modulation. And so many other things. That feeling when you move faders manually is magic on it. As said by one of my favorite artists and friends, Lucas (aka dc11), Bark Filter has his signature sound.

What does the term ‘underground’ mean to you?

Most kinds of music were underground before, and music was a way for people to fight for their rights, independence, and liberty. Today this word, for me, is used for everything, unfortunately. To do business, especially in the music industry. Some event planners use this word to make their events more “hype.”

When you do something « underground » today, you want to keep it far from commercial and ordinary ways. Keep your stuff unique and personal, don’t do it for others.

How do you like to relax when you’re not making music?

I think about music and modular all the time, even if I don't listen to them. But during my actual free time, I enjoy chilling with friends and family. I love discovering new stuff, meals, arts, places, cultures

What are your top 5 techno tracks right now?

It's hard to choose only 5... Right now, I really like deep, mental, textured vibes when I listen Techno music. I share with you these 5 tracks:

1 Lewis Fautzi – Neurohumural Transmission [FAUT044]

2 Norbak – Sátira [NRBK001]

3 Orbe – Rebirth PCT [INSG003]

4 Viels – A Different Way To Escape [WU72D]

5 Tauceti – Rebuilding [30DEXO-013]

What are your plans for the future? What can we expect from you? Are you working on new music?

At the moment, I'm working on my complete live set, entirely improvised on my modular system. I will play it for taking Hit and the French national music day, and I plan to record some versions of it for podcasts and radios.
